Few effects, at the right moment

Effects are the easiest thing to overdo. Used everywhere they become background noise; used at two chosen moments they are what ends up in the photographs and in the retelling.

So we design them as cues rather than as equipment: first we decide the exact instant — the entrance, the cake, the first dance, a product reveal — and then we choose the effect that moment needs.

Cold sparks are not pyrotechnics

This is the most common request and the most common misunderstanding, so it is worth being precise.

Cold spark fountains produce a bright jet at a far lower temperature than a firework, with no open flame and no significant smoke. They are triggered over DMX, so they fire on the exact beat alongside the music and the lighting rather than by eye.

That is what makes them usable indoors, where the venue permits it, and why they have largely replaced traditional effects for the couple’s entrance and the cake. They remain equipment to treat with judgement: they need safe distances and a considered position, which we define.

Haze and low fog do opposite jobs

The two get confused constantly.

Haze is a fine, even veil you are not meant to see: its job is to make light beams visible in the air. Without it, beams only exist where they land and half the lighting design is lost. It is almost always needed where there are moving heads.

Low fog is something else: it stays on the floor and creates the cloud effect for a first dance or an entrance. It does not rise, does not invade the room, and clears quickly.

Both have to be agreed with the venue, because in some rooms the smoke detectors must be temporarily isolated by someone authorised to do it.

What your venue will allow

The answer depends on the venue far more than on the effect. Historic rooms, low ceilings, fire systems that cannot be isolated: each imposes different limits, and those limits are only knowable by asking.

If you are planning from abroad this matters more, not less — it is exactly the kind of thing that is easy to assume and expensive to discover late. Tell us which effect you have in mind and where the event is: we check with the venue ourselves, and if something cannot be done we say so early.

Confetti is worth flagging separately: it photographs beautifully and somebody has to sweep it up afterwards, so it is always agreed with the venue in advance. Biodegradable paper versions are the only ones some spaces accept.

Tell us the moments you want to mark — not the effects, the moments. From there we propose what to use, how many units and where they go, alongside the rest of the build: effects only work when they fire in sync with sound and light, and that sync is built at the desk.
